Working at a Mets Game: A Good Idea in Theory

It was beautiful out, truly perfect, and I was paying zero attention to the game.

On Monday, when the Mets marketing team emailed fans an invitation to "Work from Home Plate"—touting the beautiful weather, an image of a laptop next to home plate, and affordable tickets for the getaway day Wednesday matinee game against the Phillies—they were reading the room correctly

I guess the catcher is also working at their second desk job in this scenario?

Finally, suddenly, it was Spring in New York City, and the prospect of getting to sit outside on a bucolic spring day seemed incredibly enticing. But! But! My pesky job—sending emails, answering calls, writing stories—had to be done as well. Here, however, the Mets were offering the best of all worlds. Work…but from Citi Field. Pete Alonso, you enticing devil you!

I hadn't yet gone to a Mets game this year, turned off by the nasty early spring weather, and more generally feeling a bit down on the team because of Steve Cohen's extremely obvious efforts to shower everyone in the borough with money until they relent and let him build a casino. (That being said, I am also a Knicks fan, so I am habitually subjected to malignant sports team ownership.)

Hell Gate's advance scout Rick Paulas reported back from Monday's game that the public WiFi at Citi Field was, in fact, quite good, so after discussing it with the Hell Gate editorial team, it was decided that I would be allowed to Work from Home Plate…on the condition that I actually, you know, work.
