Last June, Hell Gate celebrated the return of the 99 cent slice to BD Star Pizza on Avenue A in the East Village. At the time, owner Sana Ullah told this publication that while inflation during President Joe Biden's term meant increases in the costs of things like flour, cheese, and even napkins, the market itself simply couldn't stand a $1.50 slice. He lowered the price back down to 99 cents, and saw demand restored.
But last week, facing an even more uncertain and adverse economic environment under President Donald Trump, the 99 cent sign on the awning of BD Star Pizza was unceremoniously ripped off. The dollar slice was now $1.50.
