Big news for New York City bird lovers dropped at the end of last week, when MTA officials announced that three peregrine falcon chicks have been born in a nest atop one of the towers of the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge.
The two female chicks have been named Genevieve and Marcella. These are normal, sensible, girl names. (The name Genevieve means "woman of the family," and Marcella obviously conjures the domestic virtues of Marcella Hazan, whose journey to the heights of Italian cuisine legendarily began at home, with a simple desire to feed her husband.)
Naturally, the male fledgling is named *voice-of-God reverb effect* SKYFORGER.
"Who named these falcons?" you may be wondering right now. Me. I named them. After many years of relentless petitioning, the MTA now lets me name the falcons. Let me explain.
