Talk Mayor to Me: Brighton Beach Tashkent and Park Slope Food Coop

"You know, all the politicians have a dark side."

With the Democratic mayoral primary three weeks away, Hell Gate is hitting the streets to hear from New Yorkers about the issues that are most important to them, and who they like (and don't like) in the race.

Tashkent Supermarket

Our first stop: Tashkent Supermarket in Brighton Beach, where this reporter pestered shoppers loading up on steaming plates of the rice-based dish plov and morkovcha, an Uzbeki-Korean carrot salad. In 2021, the neighborhood voted heavily for Eric Adams, with some Andrew Yang precincts sprinkled in.

The upcoming election was notably not top-of-mind for Tashkent regulars, many of whom told us they are non-voting green card holders from Russia, Georgia, Uzbekistan, and other post-Soviet bloc nations.

Those who are registered to vote seemed to think this year’s showing left a lot to be desired. Many said that they might not even bother going to the polls.

Benjamin Faynvits (Liv Veazey / Hell Gate)

Benjamin Faynvits, 71, who is originally from Latvia and now retired, said, "I voted for Adams in the last election. In my opinion, he did a poor job. First he comes, he invites all the immigrants and now when Trump comes he changes his mind. So how can I trust him? You know, one day, one thing, the next day he wake up and he change his mind."
