Talk Mayor to Me: Co-Op City and Canarsie

As early voting begins, we visited some neighborhoods where Andrew Cuomo performed well during the primary. Are they still Cuomo strongholds? Or has Zohran Mamdani gained ground?

Zohran Mamdani trounced Andrew Cuomo in the Democratic primary—except in outerborough, middle-class, and majority-Black neighborhoods. While polls show that Mamdani has gained ground among Black voters in New York City since June, how has that shift translated on the ground?

This Monday, Hell Gate went to Co-op City in the Bronx and Canarsie in Brooklyn to speak with voters. These two neighborhoods are where Cuomo's support in the primary was among the strongest in the city.

We wanted to know: Has Mamdani's campaign gained any traction here, to add to his double-digit lead over Cuomo with less than two weeks to go? Or are voters still warm to Cuomo, who's currently polling at 29 percent? And what do voters think of the prospect of a Mamdani mayoralty?
