St. Marks Place, the spiritual heart of the East Village, seems to attract both an inordinate amount of street-level churn and some of the city's most heartfelt hand-wringing and nostalgia. Oh no, that place you used to go to all the time when you were a teenager/in college/first moved here in your 20s is now something different??? Yeah buddy, welcome to New York City. To riff on the title of Ada Calhoun's excellent portrait of the neighborhood's consistent vitality through the decades, even in the face of constant change, "St. Marks Is Dead, Long Live St. Marks."
Anyway, the most exciting St. Marks news this week is that the crew behind the excellent Electric Burrito, which specializes in SoCal stoner food, just opened an equally awesome burger spot around the corner called HighLife. And, as at Burrito, HighLife serves up a chill vibe, a tight menu of comfort classics, and some serious love for the game.
