This time last year, New York witnessed a historic upset, as former Governor Andrew Cuomo was soundly trounced in the Democratic primary by an upstart Muslim democratic socialist with boundless charisma and a motivated army of volunteers. But was Mamdani's primary win last year a fluke, the product of very narrow, specific, irreplicable conditions—or an indication of broader shifts within the Democratic Party and a sign of the rising power of the Democratic Socialists of America?
