In its ongoing efforts to overcome a budget deficit that had ballooned to $10 million this past fall, New York Public Radio is firing almost two dozen workers, as well as likely ending its longtime music program "New Sounds." This latest round of layoffs comes on the heels of layoffs in September 2024 and October 2023.
In an email to staff on Tuesday, NYPR President and CEO LaFontaine Oliver said that the cuts were necessary to "bring the organization into a financially sustainable position." Eighteen employees are being laid off, and three positions are becoming part-time roles. Altogether, the 21 positions represent 7.7 percent of NYPR's workforce. Oliver also announced that NYPR would no longer fill seven open roles, and would also stop contributing to the company's 403(b) retirement plan matching program.
The cuts come after the company fired 20 staff in October 2023 and another 26 in September 2024. Oliver announced that this latest round of cost-cutting will "allow us to enter the next fiscal year within striking distance of break-even for the first time in some years."
