Morning Spew: Bills Mafia Governor Hits Training Camp

Kathy Hochul is paying the Bills. Plus, more news for your Thursday morning.

A few years ago, to widespread horror and dismay, Governor Kathy Hochul engineered a $1 billion public subsidy to a family of fracked-oil-billionaire Florida residents who are also major campaign donors, and who also own the Buffalo Bills.

The money was ostensibly to induce her friends and donors, the billionaire owners, to keep their professional football team in Buffalo and not move it elsewhere, which they were now threatening to do if the people of New York didn't buy them a new stadium, even though they bought the team promising to keep it in Buffalo. She claimed that it was a good deal because the subsidy would ultimately pay for itself and then some with job creation, economic activity and resultant tax revenue, but any close look at those claims revealed them to be laughable. Making matters worse, she tried to tell people that it wasn't as expensive as it seemed because some of the public money she was handing to these billionaires was actually money she had recently extorted from an indigenous tribe by freezing all of their bank accounts. (The Senecas and the Bills seem to be on good terms these days.)
