Palestinian artists are at work in Gaza, despite the ongoing genocide, and their talent is on display in the Gaza Biennale, a traveling exhibit with pieces selected by local curators in cities around the world, and which opens in New York City today at the Clinton Hill art gallery Recess. The exhibit, titled "From Gaza to the World (من غزة إلى العالم)," is made up mostly of reproductions of Gazan artworks: installations recreated according to artist instructions; short films; and digital printouts and projections of paintings and drawings, their fidelity degraded by Israel's blockade. The exhibit, mediated by the digital communication made necessary by the surveillance and captivity of the artists, forces viewers to confront the significance of the oft-repeated description of Gaza as an "open-air prison."
The Gaza Biennale has been exhibited in Denmark, Scotland, and France since its launch in April 2024. The artists are all Gazan, and most are still there, though, as the curators note in a press release, some have been displaced since the war started.
