Strolling along Dekalb Avenue, you can't miss Shoof Burger. Essentially a rebranding/repurposing of the old Textbook Cafe, and still covered in all those goofy, cartoony figures, the facade would stand out pretty much anywhere in town, but it's an especially whimsical sight here on this construction-addled stretch of Fort Greene.
Look closer though, and you'll notice that the menu—and the mission—of the place has changed from its Textbook days. Painted above the doorway, and the only spot of color anywhere on the exterior, is a watermelon slice, a symbol of Palestinian resistance and persistence in the face of colonization, starvation, and genocide.
