Josue Pierre and Jonathan Pierre-LaFleur, co-owners of the excellent new Rogers Burgers in Flatbush, really love their neighborhood. The former grew up around the corner on Church Avenue, the latter moved here from Port-au-Prince in 2015, and both still live just a few blocks away from what I'd consider the best new burger joint in town.
"I've seen a lot of change around here since the 1980s and 1990s," Pierre told Hell Gate as we sat outside the shop on this especially pleasant, tree-lined stretch of Rogers Avenue. "All these windows were boarded up, and retail space was dead. But then the Caribbean-American community arrived and breathed new life into the area. They raised their kids here. They own homes in the area. And it has internally developed into a more middle class community."
