Early Wednesday morning, hours after the federal government shutdown began, and after President Donald Trump had plastered government websites with incredibly illegal partisan spin blaming Democrats for the disruption, Trump's budget director, Project 2025 dark lord Russ Vought, got to posting.
"Roughly $18 billion in New York City infrastructure projects have been put on hold to ensure funding is not flowing based on unconstitutional DEI principles," he wrote on X. "Specifically, the Hudson Tunnel Project and the Second Ave Subway," he clarified in a quote tweet.
Ah, so they're blocking $12 billion from the extremely important cross-state tunnel that serves as a chokepoint for the biggest passenger rail corridor in the United States, and $3.4 billion from the century-in-the-making, half-made subway extension into East Harlem. (That doesn't add up to $18 billion, but maybe the OMB director was typing fast.)
