It's early on a Wednesday evening, and taxi driver Helal Ahmed is chatting with me as we crawl down Broadway from the West Village to Lower Manhattan.
"So you're a journalist?" Ahmed asks, grinning. "That's good! Talking, talking, talking."
Ahmed is from Bangladesh, I am from New Zealand—two small nations with a penchant for cricket. But I'm doing less small talk than usual, because my focus tonight is on the tiny TV screen that is a foot in front of my face.
I've hailed Ahmed's taxi with one purpose only: to experience the new Trump-aligned programming now playing in the backseat of every yellow cab in New York City.
As of this month, the screens in taxi cabs are now playing national news from Newsmax—the ultra-conservative media outlet known for pushing baseless election fraud claims.
