Popular Queens GOP Bigot Faces a Challenge from a Democratic FDNY Firefighter

Democrat Ben Chou faces long odds in trying to unseat Republican City Councilmember Vickie Paladino in Queens' 19th District.

She called for mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani to be deported. She attacked the grieving partner of a murder victim. She suggested a reporter should be punched in the face.

Now Republican City Councilmember Vickie Paladino is running for re-election, and the most right-wing member of the City Council faces a challenge from an FDNY firefighter who's vowing to turn down the temperature.

Ben Chou won the Democratic primary to take on Paladino in the Queens district covering Whitestone, College Point, Bayside and Douglaston.

Chou bills himself as "someone who puts out fires instead of starting them."

"This approach, I find very divisive," Chou told Hell Gate of his opponent’s style. "It's a rhetoric of discord and hate. I would definitely approach things with more empathy."
