Through four governors and countless rounds of Albany scandal, Tom DiNapoli just keeps chugging along.
Despite his low profile, the state comptroller has served for nearly two decades, never drawing a primary challenger—until now.
Two Democratic candidates are set to take on the longtime incumbent to become the state’s top fiscal watchdog and manage its nearly $300 billion pension fund. A third would-be challenger was kicked off the ballot in late April.
After Lieutenant Governor Antonio Delgado dropped his primary challenge to Governor Kathy Hochul, the comptroller's race will be the only statewide contest on the primary ballot in June.
Drew Warshaw, a former affordable housing executive, and Raj Goyle, a former Kansas state lawmaker, say DiNapoli has taken a lackluster approach to the job and failed to put its powers to full use.
"This office is the living embodiment of wasted political power," Goyle told Hell Gate.
