Governor Kathy Hochul wants to put a cop on every single subway train overnight for the next six months, in order to stop the "chaos" in the subway system.
This proposal was perhaps the most eye-opening of Hochul's 2025 State of the State address, which she gave in Albany on Tuesday afternoon, as the state's legislative leaders and Mayor Eric Adams looked on.
"I want to see uniformed police on the platforms, but more importantly, we will put an officer on every single train, overnight—9 p.m. to 5 a.m—over the next six months, and the state will support these efforts financially, because we have to stop the chaos," Hochul told the crowd.
Even if you accept the premise that more police officers will stop high-profile incidents of crime (they almost certainly will not), the NYPD is already embroiled in an overtime scandal—how much more money is Hochul proposing to spend on policing instead of literally anything else? The state of the state book that Hochul's office released does not contain any specifics. Mayor Adams released a statement praising Hochul's entire agenda.
Here are some more highlights (and lowlights) of Hochul's agenda:
