Compared to the fully grown, gangly and world-weary personality that is Hell Gate's news and politics apparatus, Hell Gate's culture section is our precious baby. Over the years of this website-slash-newsletter-slash-podcast's existence, it has produced stories, musings, and reviews that we're extremely proud of, but they are but mewls of innocence that hint at the thunder to come from what we hope to be the last real local culture desk in New York City.
It remains true that this humble local culture section could yet grow to become anything, and now that Hell Gate has hired a new editor, Julianne Escobedo Shepherd, who has years of experience covering culture, it's clear now that it is time for this baby to start walking and talking, and developing a personality of its own—one that will keep readers like you up-to-date on the best ways to move through the city. The world is the Hell Gate culture section's oyster. Will it be briny or buttery? Only time will tell.
