What happens when local lawmakers summon members of the Mamdani administration and pack the City Council chambers for a marathon hearing on one of the most controversial topics playing out in New York City?
Not much, apparently.
On Wednesday morning, the City Council held its long-awaited hearing on a whopping 21 bills and two resolutions to regulate e-bikes.
But if the Council's aim was to use the hearing to grab headlines to prove they were taking the issue seriously, they instead showed New Yorkers how terrible they are at asking questions and using the public's time.
NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch didn't bother to show up, continuing a long tradition of police apathy toward street safety issues in a City that supposedly has a goal of zero traffic fatalities. Sam Levine, the Commissioner of the Department of Consumer and Worker Protection, and Mike Flynn, the Department of Transportation commissioner, were both there with their top aides, but you couldn't blame them if they wanted to be somewhere else.
