As ballroom star and activist Gia Love (of the House of Juicy Couture and House of Allure) strutted and sashayed across the stage at Performance Space New York last night, she had a simple request for the audience: Love wanted people to start taking New York City elections seriously, and ask for more than just performative gestures toward the trans community.
"I don't care if I'm being called names as I'm walking down the street, can I have some fucking housing? I understand that we want dignity and respect, but it starts with actual institutional change. Fighting for things like food, education, housing—if the policymakers aren't talking about that? Kick them to the curb," she said, to screams from the audience. "This is a matter of life or death, and you can pump the next song."
