On Tuesday night, Queens Assemblymember Zohran Mamdani emerged victorious in the 2025 Democratic mayoral primary before subsequent rounds of ranked-choice voting even had time to kick in. The 33-year-old democratic socialist trounced former Governor Andrew Cuomo in a historic upset that even we, the keen and seasoned political analysts at Hell Gate, weren't expecting. (I guess that's why it's an upset? Whatever. We're tired.) Last night, we reacted to the news via our livestream. Hell Gate reported from watch parties for supporters of City Council Speaker Adrienne Adams, Comptroller Brad Lander, and, yes, Cuomo and Mamdani, as well as from our very DIY studio at Life World—if you missed it, fret not and watch the whole thing here.
But that was then, and this is now. The churn never stops, baby! So, in the clear light of Wednesday morning, we wanted to take a beat to talk about the night's biggest winners and losers, as we head toward the general election in November that will decide once and for all who the next mayor of New York City will be.
