On Wednesday, the mayoral race got even murkier—after a few weeks of increasing speculation, City Council Speaker Adrienne Adams announced she's throwing her own hat in the ring.
"New Yorkers can't afford to live here, City Hall is in chaos, and Donald Trump is corrupting our city's independence. It's time to stand up," Speaker Adams said in a statement. She added, "I never planned to run for mayor, but I'm not giving up on New York City."
Why would Speaker Adams, who has little citywide name recognition and has never expressed a desire to run for higher office, enter a Democratic primary that already has eight candidates in the running? In a word, Cuomo—and more specifically, to prevent the former governor from ever becoming mayor.
