What's Going on With Bushwick Daily?

Owner and publisher Alec Meeker fired the site's editor-in-chief in November. Now he's seemingly taking the 15-year-old publication in a different direction.

Want to know what's happening in Bushwick? Since 2009, Bushwick Daily has been the north Brooklyn neighborhood's destination for hyperlocal news, from coverage of community board meetings to restaurant reviews to writeups of local performances. The site has done all of the above, at a fairly steady clip, for the past 15 years.

But back in November, the drumbeat of stories slowed down, leaving loyal readers asking why. Then, at the beginning of December, a change in website formatting trapped existing articles in the left third of the screen. "Does anyone know what's going on with the Bushwick Daily," one wrote on Reddit. "Was there a change in ownership?"

Kind of. According to former and current members of Bushwick Daily's editorial team, the recent changes in website layout, publishing frequency, and bylines on the site are due to the departure of its editor-in-chief, Andrew Karpan, who told Hell Gate that publisher Alec Meeker fired him over text message in November.
