Two Terrific New Taco Stands Are Changing the Game Below 14th Street

Both Santo in Soho and Cariñito near Union Square serve unusual—and unusually good—tacos.

Oh sorry, did I say that downtown Manhattan was going through some kind of burger boom? I meant tacos. It's tacos that are the new hotness below 14th Street, with two top-tier stands recently opened within a mile of each other, each with strong CDMX bonafides, and neither overly concerned with being "authentic" at the expense of being "delicious."

Actually there are three new taco stands in the area if you include the MacDougal Street outpost of Greenpoint's excellent El Chato, which you should, because the Brooklyn original is also very good. Anyway, here's the full scoop on Santo Taco, located at street level in the iconic La Esquina building, and the Cariñito Tacos residency (through at least the fall) on University Place.
