As Starbucks Baristas Strike in Park Slope, the NYPD Responds With Arrests

Spirits were high at a one-day strike protesting the closure of the Seventh Avenue Starbucks, despite seven arrests and a bleak forecast for the national labor movement.

On Tuesday, just after noon at the Seventh Avenue Starbucks in Park Slope, Jenn, a barista behind the counter, cut through the din of friendly chatter filling the coffee shop to announce that she and her fellow partners behind the counter were walking out and beginning their one-day strike, an announcement that was greeted with cheers and chants of "no contract, no coffee!" as people made their way outside.

An hour later, NYPD officers had handcuffed seven people in the otherwise empty storefront. Cops moved in and out of the store and barked into their cell phones and walkie-talkies while Starbucks Workers United organizers and their supporters continued to make noise on the sidewalk outside.
