Things Are Looking Grim Again for Canal Street's Iconic Slushie Bodega

A building manager now claims A&N Fruit Store will reopen in the spring of 2027—an eternity for slushie-starved New Yorkers.

On a week like this, with sun and smoke bearing down on Chinatown, New Yorkers sure could use a cold, fresh, fruity beverage. But they won't be getting it from A&N Fruit Store.

The bodega at Canal Street and Essex Street, famous for its slushies and smoothies made from freshly chopped fruit, closed for the winter because the new landlord was doing renovations. As Hell Gate reported, it was supposed to reopen in the spring.

But spring has come and gone, and all the commercial spaces at 23-27 Canal Street remain closed and locked behind grates. The bodega's number is disconnected, and we haven't been able to reach beloved A&N owners Dong Wang and Helen Chen.
