Holy crap, it's actually happening. The City Council finally looks set to pass legislation today that would force the City to double the number of public bathrooms across New York City by 2035.
"New York City has 8.3 million residents, but just over 1,000 public bathrooms," the bill's lead sponsor, Councilmember Sandy Nurse, told Hell Gate. "It literally makes no sense." That's about one public bathroom for every 7,786 New Yorkers. But it's not surprising it's gotten to this point—there is no one City agency responsible for making sure New Yorkers have a place to go, Nurse said.
"I think most people would be surprised to know that New York City just doesn't have a strategic plan, or master plan for public bathrooms. Your city just doesn't plan for public bathrooms the way we plan for our streets, our parks, our schools," she said.
