The muckraking was put on pause at ProPublica yesterday, as about 150 of the national nonprofit news outlet's workers went on a one-day strike. Their goal? For management to meet their demands, including guardrails around the use of AI, as they continue to negotiate their first contract—a process that's now entering its second year.
In New York City, dozens of ProPublica staff, spanning all departments, abandoned their desks to instead picket from nine to five outside their SoHo office building. They also asked their readers to refrain from visiting the site to read their work.
"Bad contracts make poor journalism!" the workers chanted, as they marched in a loop around Scabby the Rat. "We need a contract! Tell me why? Because you can't replace us with AI!"
