OMNY, the MTA's problem-laden and oft-complained-about replacement for MetroCards, is now getting a much-needed "system upgrade." But it's going to be annoying, especially for those of us who rely on an actual OMNY card. Starting tonight at 10 p.m. and until 7 p.m. on Sunday, the MTA's OMNY card machines will be offline, meaning transit riders looking to purchase or reload an OMNY card won't be able to do so, as the system goes through an upgrade to "improve performance and enhance the experience for all of our tap-and-ride customers." You'll still be able to swipe in with OMNY if you've got enough cash loaded up on your OMNY card, or use your credit or debit card, or tap-to-pay on your phone, or even your MetroCard, which the MTA is phasing out by the end of this year. But charges you incur during this period won't be processed until after the weekend.
The MTA's advice for OMNY card users? "Make sure your OMNY card has enough funds to last you through the weekend." (Reached for comment, the MTA directed Hell Gate back to its website.)
