OHYUNG Wants You to Have an 'Overwhelming Sensory Experience'

The musician's new album steals sounds from New York's queer nightlife scene.

Somehow, spending the last few years making experimental music, including the soundtrack to A24's "Problemista," led Lia Ouyang Rusli to make "You're Always On My Mind" their most pop-influenced OHYUNG album. It comes out March 28.

"I think I was learning and trying a lot of different things, and developing sonic textures," Rusli told me. "A lot of experimental music moves me in its own way, but pop hits my soul."

Ironically, Rusli said they began to bump up against the limitations of experimental music. "And so I was like, how do I take everything I learned sonically and rework it into a pop structure while maintaining its weirdness?"
