Reminded by the AG That NY Law Forbids Discrimination, NYU Langone Stays Mum on Canceled Appointments for Trans Kids

New York AG Letitia James issued a letter reminding health care providers that they can’t discriminate against trans patients.

On Monday, following reporting by Hell Gate (and the New York Times) that the NYU Langone health care network was canceling appointments for gender-affirming care for young trans patients, New York Attorney General Letitia James sent a letter to health care providers across the state reminding them that they can't just start cutting back health care to trans kids.

Despite President Donald Trump's executive orders threatening federal funding for programs that don't conform to his ideological dictates—including one threatening funding for providers who offer gender-affirming care to minors and young adults under the age of 19—those threats have been challenged in court by 22 attorneys general, and are currently blocked by a temporary restraining order. The Trump administration has grudgingly instructed federal agencies that they actually can't withhold funds from organizations or programs based on those presidential orders.

James's letter makes clear that if any health care providers were planning on throwing their young trans patients under the bus to protect their federal funding, that funding isn't currently in jeopardy.
