NY Public Radio's Board Won't Explain Why Their New CEO Just Left

The biggest public radio station in the country is now looking for its fifth leader in 7 years.

New York Public Radio, the parent organization of WNYC, WQXR, New Jersey Public Radio, and Gothamist, announced the departure of its CEO and President Christy Tanner on Tuesday morning, just eight months after she was hired.

The reason for Tanner's departure, so soon into her tenure, remains a mystery. NYPR's press release gives no explanation for the abrupt development, nor, according to Gothamist, does a note to staff left by Tanner.

Tanner did not respond to a direct message seeking her comment. Hell Gate's questions, emailed to NYPR, received a response from the public relations firm BerlinRosen that did not include answers to the questions.

Tanner's abrupt exit extends a period of turmoil in the upper ranks of the nation's biggest public radio station, which is now searching for its fifth non-interim president and CEO since 2019.
