Mamdani's Tricky Pledge to Stop Bogus Ticket Fees

And more news for your Tuesday.

Have you been listening to the Hell Gate Podcast? You can catch last week's episode here.

Mayor Zohran Mamdani doesn't want New Yorkers to be ripped off by their gym memberships or their Taylor Swift concert and FIFA World Cup tickets, and he's now promised that his administration is going to go after the companies making them more expensive.

Standing next to an outdoor gym in Long Island City Monday afternoon, the mayor signed an executive order directing his new Department of Consumer and Worker Protections head Sam Levine to immediately start cracking down on business that charge bogus fees and trap consumers in subscriptions, with his team name-dropping a naughty list that includes Uber, GrubHub, Equinox, Amazon, and Ticketmaster.

"When you scrimp and save for a Taylor Swift concert that you have been looking forward to all year, only for a massive corporation to add hundreds of dollars at the final moment, that is disrespect," Mamdani said.

"Don't wait for a subpoena,” Levine added as a warning to businesses. "Do right by your customers today."
