On Friday evening, Governor Kathy Hochul and Mayor Zohran Mamdani kicked off early voting with a campaign stop for Hochul in McCarren Park, the leafy, flat expanse that marks the divide between Williamsburg and Greenpoint. It was one of two appearances together over the weekend, this one planned as a surprise walk-and-talk with regular New Yorkers, encouraging them to vote early for Hochul. But it was planned for 5 p.m., not long after local students got out of school, and what would have otherwise been a normal appearance became nothing less than a small celebrity-style frenzy populated mostly by young people of color, representing Mamdani's popularity with New Yorkers who may not be old enough to vote now, but will be in 2029, when the mayor is up for reelection himself.
