Hell Gate is hiring! More details below.

Hell Gate Is Hiring a Writer-Editor

Hell Gate, a worker-owned, subscriber-funded New York City news outlet, is looking to bring on an additional writer-editor to join our small but mighty newsroom.

Launched by a group of journalists in the spring of 2022, Hell Gate's fearless, funny, compelling, and useful journalism has been widely cited and celebrated by the New York Times, New York Magazine, the Washington Post, and readers everywhere.

As a worker-owned cooperative, the people who do the work—i.e., the journalists—run and operate the company.

Does bringing back the dark art of blogging excite you? Are you brimming with ideas? Are you itching to dive deep into an offbeat New York City story that you can’t picture anywhere else but Hell Gate?

And crucially: Does the thought of building a sustainable, worker-owned news outlet that is beholden to no one but our readers and ourselves thrill you? If yes, then apply!

Your roles and qualifications:

Hell Gate is small, and our writer-editors do literally everything, from reporting and writing to crafting our social media posts and building out our newsletters, as well as the work of running a company.

Ideal candidates should have several years of experience writing about New York City, should understand and appreciate the editorial voice of Hell Gate, and should be comfortable in many roles: a breaking news reporter ready to dash to an unfolding scene, an investigative feature writer who can smell a rat and will go the distance to uncover it, a blogger who can riff on anything and isn't afraid to have a bit of a sharp edge, a writer with a finger on the cultural pulse.

Writer-editors are expected to write regularly for the site—two stories (blogs, Q&As, short reported pieces, columns) and one of our Morning Spews per week, as well as work on longer feature stories. You should be very comfortable pitching your own story ideas. Do you also love editing? We're not looking for an editor per se, but some experience editing is a plus. You should also be eager to participate in the work of keeping Hell Gate running. Interested in planning events or coming up with company-wide policy? Great!

If even some of this applies to you and excites you, please consider applying! We're not looking for anyone with a specific beat or skill set—but tell us what you would bring to our coverage.

The job details:

This position is a six-month, full-time position. This is an at-will position. After the six-month period, upon mutual agreement, writer-editors will be eligible to join Hell Gate as a worker-owner, with an ownership stake in Hell Gate and a voice in its governance.

The monthly salary for the six-month position is $6,250, based off of the writer-editor annual salary of $75,000.

Benefits that kick in immediately include:

  • 100 percent employer-paid health, dental, and vision insurance
  • A generous PTO policy (25 days of paid vacation, 12 sick days, and two floating holidays every year)

Other benefits that worker-owners receive include three months paid parental leave and a $1,200 tech stipend every 24 months.

Candidates must live in New York City. Remote work is encouraged (though you can choose to work out of our office, which we use two days/week). Our general business hours are Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., though occasional evening and weekend work will be required.

Women, people of color, people with disabilities, and LGBT candidates are strongly encouraged to apply.

How to apply:

To apply, please email jobs@hellgatenyc.com with:

  • A resume
  • A cover letter that states (in three or four paragraphs) why you’re interested in the position, what you'd want to write about at Hell Gate, and an example of a story from the past year that Hell Gate did not cover but should have, and a brief explanation of how you would have covered it for us (do NOT write the full post). Please also include at least three samples of previously published work.

Please put “Writer-Editor Application” in the email subject line.

Questions? Email jobs@hellgatenyc.com.

The deadline to submit an application is January 3, 2025. We’re reviewing applications on a rolling basis, and looking to fill the position by the beginning of February, with a mid-February start date.

Hell Gate Is Hiring a Marketing and Advertising Manager (Part-time)

Hell Gate, a worker-owned, subscriber-funded New York City news outlet, is looking to bring on an additional part-time business staffer to help us grow, with a focus on marketing, advertising, partnerships, and fundraising.

Launched by a group of journalists in the spring of 2022, Hell Gate's fearless, funny, compelling, and useful journalism has been widely cited and celebrated by the New York Times, New York Magazine, Washington Post and readers everywhere. Our goal is simple: to increase our subscriber base, as well as other sources of revenue (i.e., advertising, partnerships, and donor support) and use that revenue to bring on more worker-owners, who can then produce more journalism. We are a for-profit, worker-owned cooperative—which means that the people who do the work run and control the company.

Join us to help create a sustainable path forward for local news!

Your roles and responsibilities:

The responsibilities of the part-time Marketing and External Relations Manager include:

  • Executing our 6x/year subscription sales (drafting email copy and sale graphics, sending out email blasts, tracking sales metrics, working with our website developers to get the sale on our site);
  • Managing and coordinating our ad sales and cultivating potential advertisers (creating decks, communicating with advertisers, working with our website developers to get ads up);
  • Exploring and helping to plan and execute marketing and events partnerships; and
  • Managing and coordinating our (limited) fundraising (drafting foundation proposals and reports, cultivating potential new donors).

This position will be given wide latitude to help shape the direction of Hell Gate’s marketing and sales strategy, in consultation with the worker-owners. Note: As this is a part-time position, you would not be eligible to become a worker-owner of Hell Gate.

Your qualifications:

Are you detail-oriented? Do you enjoy writing? Are you comfortable with the idea of cold-emailing potential advertisers? Love to make snazzy decks and Powerpoint presentations? Do you have experience in marketing for a news outlet? You should consider applying!

We’re looking for someone who loves reading Hell Gate and believes in our mission, and has a vision for how we can expand.

The job details:

This is a 20 hour per week, part-time position. Scheduling can be flexible, but will be within Hell Gate's normal business hours (Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.). At times, working in the evening and on the weekend may be required.

This is a salaried position, with an annual salary of $37,500. Fully employer-paid healthcare coverage (health, dental, and vision insurance) is provided.

Candidates should ideally live in New York City, but we are open to candidates who live reasonably close to the city. (Live in Philly, upstate New York, or New Jersey? Consider applying!) Remote work is encouraged, though you can choose to work out of our office, which we use two days/week.

Women, people of color, people with disabilities, and LGBT candidates are strongly encouraged to apply.

How to Apply:

To apply, please email jobs@hellgatenyc.com with:

  • A resume
  • A cover letter about why you’re interested in the position, and what experiences you’ve had that would prepare you for this type of work.

Please put "Marketing and External Relations Manager Application" in the email subject line.
