On Tuesday afternoon, a dozen activists from the group Rise and Resist drifted together in front of a Shake Shack on Varick Street in Manhattan, where they recognized each other from past collaborations or identified each other by their outfits. Some wore T-shirts with slogans like "Hands Off NYC" and "Fox Lies," and more than one person wore pairs of hot pink "Fuck ICE" earrings.
Patricia, a young Rise and Resist member wearing a high ponytail and fit-over sunglasses, led the volunteers to a nearby cafe, where she shared a map of the neighborhood showing seven locations where ICE-linked vehicles were parked on the street.
Rise and Resist members said that they have linked the vehicles to specific arrests and deportation actions through the documentation of immigrant defense networks. Most of the vehicles targeted by the protesters on Tuesday also had federal law enforcement placards on their dash.
