It feels like it's been much longer, but it was just last week when news broke that Governor Kathy Hochul was finally seriously considering removing Eric Adams as mayor of New York City, thanks to some not so subtle hints that he could be in the thrall of the Trump administration thanks to his imminent pardon for federal charges leveled back in September.
By this past Sunday, the exit of four key deputy mayors, among them three of the most respected people in the Adams administration, fueled more speculation that Hochul would exercise her authority under the state constitution to oust the mayor. By Tuesday, Reverend Al Sharpton was involved. It wasn't looking good for Hizzoner. The city air was bitingly cold and thick with anticipation.
So, on Thursday, Governor Hochul finally cut the tension in a way that is—true to form—pretty anticlimactic: Eric Adams will remain Mayor Eric Adams, with increased state oversight.
