The landslide victory of the 33-year-old socialist Zohran Mamdani against the old-guard, scandal-ridden, dynastic moderate Andrew Cuomo in the mayoral primary on Tuesday has left certain members of the Democratic Party—roiling from a tectonic shift within—in shambles. 

Do they get in line behind the young progressive who wants to tax the ultrarich, freeze the rent on stabilized buildings, and provide free MTA buses? Or do they distance themselves from a candidate who President Donald Trump on Wednesday called a "Communist Lunatic," who commentators on the right have tried to smear as an "antisemite" for his view that Israel should exist as a state "with equal rights," and who Democratic strategist James Carville on Wednesday warned could be a "damaging event" for the Democratic Party?
