A grocery store that makes fresh produce affordable for all New Yorkers? It's not just an idea floated in the mayoral race—it's happening right now in Woodside, just a few blocks from the 7 train.
Billed as the first non-profit community market in Queens, the Community Fresh Market at 37-31 58th Street looks just like a high-end grocery store, but prices are on average 30 percent lower than at competing stores. Shoppers can purchase produce, pantry staples, and frozen meats at the sticker price, or they can choose to signal to the cashier that they'd like to pay a total discounted by 25 percent or 50 percent, no questions asked.
Community Fresh Market is a project of Connected Chef, a nonprofit organization started by two food industry veterans during the COVID-19 pandemic. The nonprofit had been running a food stand in Long Island City, sending out boxes of affordable local produce to people facing food insecurity, until they were forced to move in the spring.
