Hell Gate Is Looking for a Business Manager

Hell Gate, a seven-month-old worker-owned local news outlet, is looking to work with someone to help it thrive as a business.

Launched by a group of journalists in the spring of 2022, Hell Gate's fearless, funny, compelling, and useful journalism has been widely cited and celebrated by the New York Times, New York magazine, and readers everywhere. Our goal is simple: grow subscription and advertising revenue and use that revenue to bring on more worker-owners, who can produce more journalism. We are a for-profit, worker-owned cooperative—which means that the people who do the work control the company.

Join us to help create a sustainable path forward for local news!

Your roles and responsibilities:

The responsibilities of the Business Manager include helping Hell Gate find advertisers, increase subscriptions, and develop other revenue opportunities; managing business relationships and partnerships; exploring, planning, and executing marketing and events opportunities; and coordinating Hell Gate’s business operations (paying freelancers, working with outside bookkeepers and accountants, and setting up operations with a PEO). This position will be given wide latitude to help shape the direction of Hell Gate’s business strategy.

Your qualifications:

You do not need an MBA to apply for this position. Are you detail-oriented? Have an unholy love for spreadsheets? Know how to plan events? Are you comfortable with the idea of cold-emailing potential advertisers? Love to make snazzy decks and Powerpoint presentations? Do you have experience fundraising in the nonprofit world? You should consider applying!

We’re looking for someone who loves reading Hell Gate and believes in its mission, and has a vision for how it can expand as a worker-owned news outlet that’s still mapping a path forward.

The job details:

—This is a three-month, 20 to 30 hours per week contract beginning in January 2023, with potential for an extension. There is a possibility that after the three-month period, upon mutual agreement, the Business Manager will be eligible to join the Hell Gate cooperative, with an ownership stake in Hell Gate and a voice in its governance.

—The pay range is $4,000 to $7,000/month, depending on experience. Hell Gate will also cover up to $500 of monthly healthcare premiums.

—Candidates should ideally live in New York City, though we are open to applicants who live within a reasonable commuting distance for regular in-person meetings. Remote work is encouraged (though you can choose to work out of our East Village office that’s also an abandoned bank).

—Women, people of color, people with disabilities, and LGBT candidates are strongly encouraged to apply.

—We’re aiming to fill the position by mid-January 2023, with an end of January start date.

To apply please email info@hellgatenyc.com with a resume and a short (2-3 paragraph) statement about why you’re interested in the position, and what experiences you’ve had that would prepare you for this type of work. Please put "Business Manager Application" in the email subject line.

Hell Gate Is Looking for New Writer-Editors to Join Our Crack Team!

Hell Gate is a seven-month old online publication covering New York City with all the love, humor, and rage that it inspires. We’re dedicated to the idea that if local journalism is to survive and thrive in New York City, journalists must own the means of production. We are a for-profit, worker-owned cooperative—which means that the people who do the work control the company.

And we’re growing! Hell Gate is looking to bring on two writer-editors to join our small but mighty team, on a temporary, three-month basis (with the potential to stay for the long-term).

Does bringing back the dark art of blogging excite you? Are you itching to dive deep into an offbeat NYC story that you can’t picture anywhere else but Hell Gate? And most importantly: does the thought of building a sustainable, worker-owned news outlet that is beholden to no one but our readers and ourselves thrill you? If yes, apply!

Your role and qualifications:

Hell Gate is small, and our writer-editors do literally everything, from reporting and writing to editing to crafting our social media posts and building out our newsletters.

Ideal candidates should have at least several years of experience writing about New York, and should be comfortable in many roles: a breaking news reporter ready to dash to an unfolding scene, an investigative feature writer who can smell a rat and will go the distance to uncover it, an assigning editor who knows which freelance writer would be perfect to cover a story no one else has thought of, a story editor who can coax a raw draft into shining copy, a blogger who can riff on anything, and an opinion writer who can rain fire on her enemies. If even some of this applies to you, please consider applying! We're open to applicants with a wide-range of experiences.

Bonus points for familiarity with NYC communities and scenes that aren’t regularly covered by the media.
